3 Day Excursions - Gozo

Arrive at your boutique countryside retreat and take time to settle into your beautiful surroundings. Wander through the gardens, unwind by the pool or enjoy the serenity of the spa before your culinary journey begins.

As the sun begins to set, join your hosts for a welcoming drink and meet your fellow guests.

Over a relaxed aperitif, your host will introduce the fascinating story of Malta's culinary heritage, explaining how centuries of trade, conquest and cultural exchange have shaped the island's distinctive cuisine.

You'll discover how the artisan producers you'll meet throughout the weekend honour generations of tradition while bringing fresh creativity and innovation to their craft.

Your first experience takes you to a beautiful olive grove, where you'll sample this season's freshly pressed extra virgin olive oil. Learn about Malta's rare indigenous olive varieties, Tal-Bidni and Tal-Bajda, renowned for their exceptional flavour and naturally high polyphenol content, alongside other cultivars that flourish in the island's unique climate.

As twilight falls, gather beneath the olive trees for a memorable three-course dinner celebrating the very best seasonal Maltese ingredients, thoughtfully paired with local wines.

To round off your first evening, enjoy a leisurely stroll through the enchanting, honey-coloured streets of Mdina, Malta's ancient walled capital. As the crowds fade and the city is bathed in evening light, discover why this timeless medieval city is known as the Silent City—a magical introduction to the days ahead.

Wake to a leisurely breakfast on the terrace overlooking the hotel's peaceful gardens. Choose between a continental spread of freshly baked pastries or a Mediterranean breakfast featuring seasonal fruit, local cheeses and regional specialities. Be sure to leave room for what lies ahead.

This morning, you'll step into the kitchen for an intimate hands-on cookery workshop, where you'll learn to prepare a traditional three-course Maltese lunch using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Guided by local expertise, you'll discover the techniques, flavours and stories that define Maltese home cooking before sitting down to enjoy the meal you've created, accompanied by carefully selected local wines.

Our wine expert will introduce you to Malta's distinctive indigenous grape varieties and explain how the island's unique climate and limestone soils shape their character.

The afternoon is yours to relax. Enjoy a refreshing swim, unwind in the spa or simply savour the tranquillity of the countryside before the evening unfolds.

As the golden light begins to fade, we'll take a traditional passiġġata through the historic streets of Birgu, one of Malta's oldest fortified cities. Rich in maritime history and tales of siege, Birgu offers a captivating glimpse into the island's past. Along the way, there will be time to pause at a local wine bar for an aperitif or light bite before experiencing one of Malta's oldest culinary traditions.

Late in the evening, we'll visit a family-run bakery as preparations begin for the following day's baking. Watch as skilled bakers handcraft Malta's iconic crusty loaves using time-honoured techniques before taking freshly baked bread back to the hotel to enjoy at breakfast the next morning.

After breakfast, we travel into the countryside to visit an award-winning artisan cheesemaker dedicated to preserving traditional methods while embracing exceptional quality.

Here you'll take part in a hands-on cheesemaking experience, learning how fresh milk from locally reared Maltese sheep and goats is transformed into beautifully balanced cheeses and yoghurts using natural fermentation and live cultures. Inspired by the cheesemaking traditions of medieval European monasteries, every product is crafted without artificial additives, herbs or flavourings, allowing the purity of the milk to shine through.

The dairy sources its milk exclusively from neighbouring farms located within a kilometre of the creamery, ensuring exceptional freshness while supporting local farming families.

Your efforts will be rewarded with a guided tasting of handcrafted cheeses, thoughtfully paired with a selection of Maltese wines.

Later, we journey to Valletta, Malta's magnificent UNESCO World Heritage capital. Founded by the Knights of St John in 1566, this remarkable city is a living museum where elegant Baroque architecture, imposing fortifications and panoramic harbours tell the story of one of Europe's most fascinating island nations.

Enjoy free time to explore its charming streets, independent boutiques and cafés at your own pace.

For those wishing to delve deeper into Malta's artistic heritage, we can arrange entry to St John's Co-Cathedral. Behind its remarkably understated limestone façade lies one of Europe's most spectacular Baroque interiors, adorned with richly inlaid marble tombs and Caravaggio's celebrated masterpiece, The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist.

This evening, we return to the your accommodation for a memorable farewell celebration inspired by the banquets of the Knights of St John.

A specially prepared multi-course feast showcases Malta's historic cuisine, with each course expertly paired with local wines that reflect the island's evolving winemaking tradition.

After breakfast and check-out, we leave the hotel and journey to the quieter northern reaches of Malta, where the island's rural traditions continue to flourish.

Our first visit is to the apiary of Professor David Mifsud, Head of the Department of Rural Sciences and Food Systems at the University of Malta. Here you'll gain a fascinating insight into Malta's ancient beekeeping heritage and discover why the island's name is believed by many to have been inspired by its renowned honey production. Surrounded by native flora, you'll learn how generations of beekeepers have worked in harmony with the landscape to produce distinctive honeys unique to the Maltese Islands.

Our final destination is one of Malta's most acclaimed boutique wineries—a vineyard born from passion, patience and a vision to create world-class wines with exceptional ageing potential.

Established in 2002, the estate spans four hectares and is home to more than 15,000 carefully selected vines, interspersed with olive, fig and carob trees alongside indigenous Maltese flora. Every aspect of the vineyard has been designed to express the unique character of Malta's limestone terroir.

What began as a small garage winery has evolved into an elegant estate overlooking the vineyards, framed by breathtaking views of the medieval city of Mdina, the Grand Master's summer residence, the Inquisitor's palace and the iconic Laferla Cross.

In this peaceful setting, you'll enjoy an exclusive guided wine tasting featuring the estate's award-winning wines, bringing together everything you've discovered throughout your culinary journey—Malta's landscapes, traditions, craftsmanship and warm hospitality.

As your retreat draws to a close, you'll leave with far more than wonderful memories and exceptional flavours. You'll take home a deeper understanding of the people, stories and enduring traditions that make Malta's culinary heritage unlike anywhere else in the Mediterranean.
